UConn Women Prepare for Historic Trip

Uconn WomanConnecticut has played in every N.C.A.A.women’s basketball tournament since 1989 and has always had the luxury of playing at least one tournament game a year – and sometimes as many as four – in its home state, before its sizable and adoring fan base.

Although not many people can imagine the Huskies (33-0) losing in this year’s tournament, UConn will not play in Storrs, Hartford, Bridgeport or anywhere else in Connecticut. If UConn is to win a seventh national championship, it will have to travel farther to do it.

The Huskies, riding an N.C.A.A.-women’s-record 72-game winning streak, were anointed Monday as the No. 1 overall seed for the 64-team tournament, but UConn will need to win two games each in Norfolk, Va., and Dayton, Ohio, to earn a place in the Final Four in San Antonio.

ConlonMaria_playinglgMaria Conlon,   Point Guard for the UConn Huskies from 2000-2004 is no stranger to the N.C.A.A. women’s basketball tournament.

While at UConn her team went to four National Collegiate Athletic Association Tournaments winning three Championships and four Big East regular season titles, and established an NCAA women’s basketball record with 70 consecutive wins which has now been broken by the current Woman’s Huskies team.

But what leads these teams to the championships?

A great coach.

How can business learn from sports?

The best way to explain business coaching is to explore the connection between sports coaches and business coaches. “There are huge similarities between sports and business,” ActionCOACH Jim Malski says. “Both an athlete and a business owner are driven and motivated to get their goals. They are very talented and have a single-minded focus to win.  To really take their game to the next level, however, both need the perspective of a coach, because both types of people are sometimes blind to the obstacles or challenges that are really standing in their way.”

“There are a lot of great athletes who never won a championship for a lot of different reasons,” Jim says. “Then there are those great athletes who only won a championship after they got a great coach to lead their team or help them with their game.  It’s the same with business.

Great business leaders and CEOs have all had mentors and advisors they could rely on to guide them on a path of success. Most small business owners, however, haven’t had that opportunity. That’s were business coaching can fill a need and a gap of knowledge and information for the business owner they’ve never had before.”

And like the coaches who work behind the scenes of their players’ success, good business coaches are behind the scenes of business “wins” – whether on the floor of the automobile showroom or in the realm of the executive boardroom.

“A great Business Coach provides perspective and direction – and helps with areas an owner may not know – from team building to financial mastery. says Malski”
“The sports world is full of athletes who never won a championship until they got the right coach,” says Malski.
“Business is the same. A Business Coach can mean the difference between success and failure.”

Maria ConlonMaria Conlon has seen first hand how coaching in a team environment can relate to the business world.  Maria was quoted in the UConn Hoops Legends article “I’m grateful for the opportunities and doors that opened for me from my experiences at UConn.  Everything I do today relates to what I learned from my parents, and my time at UConn.”

Business Coaching in CT tip # 9 – Convert a Single Customer into Multiple Customers

One of the easiest way to increase the number of customers is to concentrate on those already in the database.  This kind of conversion is often just as lucrative, but far less expensive, than trying to drum up business from cold calling those who have never stepped foot in the store.  By up-selling or cross-selling, for example – profits can multiply and several directions and or product lines.

For those customers who are on a limited budget or have other considerations that may be keeping them away, try a down-selling approach.  If they can purchase a less expensive product or service instead of going to a competitor, it has the same bottom line effect as recruiting a brand new customer.  Eventually – thanks to the savings they make by doing business at a price point that is within their means – they may upgrade or expand their purchases to become a more valuable and lucrative customer over time.
