Wisdom for graduates and business owners
Business owners: Where did you start?
Dear Graduate,
If I knew when I graduated what I know now, perhaps I would be even more successful. Some things you have to learn as you go, I guess. But if I were to give some advice it would be: to expand everyone’s expectations of you and exceed them.
Exceed Expectations
What I have learned as a business owner and in life is that you may not know everything. The most successful business owners lean on others in areas of weakness. They seek advice from others – some have business coaches, like myself, to hold them accountable and increase their awareness. They are not ashamed to admit they are not an expert at everything. They check their pride at the door and are always working on themselves. Successful entreprenuers are constantly challenging themselves, attending workshops, seminars and conferences. The key here is that they are open to learning.
Always remain open to learning
In tough times successful business owners look for opportunities in their market place. They improve systems, cut costs and work on their team. Successful business owners don’t wait for things to happen, they make them happen. They don’t blame the economy or others for their business being slow. They adapt with the current environment.
Leaders must adapt – be accountable
In business and in life, you must try not to let the negative prevail. Remember the positive – everyone focuses on the things that they want in life. It’s great to have goals don’t get me wrong, but what about being positive about what you have. Current graduates – you have just obtained a higher level of education, enriched your lives with new experiences and knowledge. Keep this accomplishment with you always – cherish it.

Lastly, follow your intuition, it’s usually right. You must go with your gut. Follow your dreams and never give up. The statistics aren’t favorable for new business owners – 50% of businesses fail within the first 5 years. I can only imagine that’s because they didn’t pay attention to my advice above. But it may help you to exceed expectations, be open to learning, constant about improving yourself, positive, accountable, cherish what you have and always, always follow your intuition.
