National Small Business Week – Client Spotlight, Worthington Cosmetic Dentistry

As part of National Small Business Week, we would like to recognize and highlight a few of our Small Business clients.  These are clients who have looked the recession in the eye and kept going. They have chosen to work ON their businesses rather than IN their business.   We would like to recognize their success.

“Of our approximately 50 1-2-1 mentoring and group coaching clients, more than 95% achieved net profit increases during 2010, with one reaching 1,000%,”
Jim Malski, Next Level Strategies, Inc., an ActionCOACH licensed firm, leading business owners to the next level since 2001

Dr. Worthington has been practicing dentistry for almost 30 years and can fix virtually any dental problem.

People trust Dr. Worthington to get them smiling again!

Dr. Worthington is one of only five dentists in Fairfield County chosen for Top Doc, a new web-based service that makes it easier to find highly rated physicians and dentists.

His selection was based on hundreds of peer reviews from dentists, patient satisfaction surveys and reviews by healthcare rating organizations.

Business challenge: My biggest business challenge came in the spring of 2001 when I made the decision to sell my dental practice in Manhattan that was literally a cash cow for nearly 2 decades and open an office in my hometown of Fairfield, CT.

Biggest Risk:  When we talk about risks, none could match my biggest business challenge of selling my “cash cow” and starting from scratch to build another. I used the money from the sale of my original practice and borrowed everything else I needed to build an office nicer and more modern than any other in Fairfield County.  Fortunately I did this at the right time in history when money flowed freely through the economy and Cosmetic Dentistry was a hot commodity. I found the web and as an inexpensive vehicle to draw patients in who wanted to look younger and more beautiful and were not in the least bit concerned with the cost. Financing for patients was readily available so even those consumers that had little capital were able to borrow the money to get what they wanted. It didn’t take long before my new business was in the black.

Business Goal:   One can only imagine what the recession of 2008 -2010 did to my new dream practice. There were days that I would call the phone company to find out if there was anything wrong with the lines because the phones simply stopped ringing. Dentistry had become “elective” and if someone did not have pain they simply stayed away. Now that I am seeing a significant recovery, thanks in no small part to my hiring Josh Slavitt as my business coach, my next business goal is making my business recession proof. He reminds me constantly that although Cosmetic Dentistry will remain elective my abilities to do the complex dentistry that most dentists can’t do will always be a hot commodity. I am also working at expanding my practice in areas that I choose not to practice. I have hired a very capable associate that deals solely with patients with TMJ disorders, facial pain, sleep apnea and chronic snoring. Gone are the days that cash flow was based solely on what I could produce.
